What is AVIF?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. At the same visual quality, AVIF files are typically 30–50% smaller than JPG and noticeably smaller than WEBP, and they support transparency, HDR and wide colour. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari (16 and newer) all display AVIF, which makes it a great choice for faster websites and better Core Web Vitals scores.

Convert to AVIF

Quality 50–65 suits most photos, and you will rarely see a difference from the original. Use Lossless for screenshots or graphics that must stay pixel-perfect. The Smallest file setting takes longer but squeezes out a few more kilobytes, which is worth it for hero images on your site.

Convert AVIF to JPG or PNG

Some older programs, email clients and upload forms still don't accept AVIF. Convert AVIF to JPG for the widest compatibility, to PNG to keep transparency, or to WEBP for a smaller file that is still widely supported.

How much smaller is AVIF than JPG?
Usually 30–50% smaller at the same visual quality, and sometimes more for photos with smooth areas such as sky or skin.
Why does converting to AVIF take a few seconds?
AVIF compression is very efficient but computationally heavy. Large photos can take a few seconds each. Choose the Fast speed or resize the images to speed it up.
Can I open AVIF files on Windows or Mac?
Windows 11 and macOS Ventura or newer can open AVIF natively. For older systems, or apps that don't support it, convert the AVIF to JPG or PNG here.
Is there a file limit?
No. You can convert as many images as you want. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
