How to use Passport Photo Maker
- 1
Upload a photo
Use a sharp, front-facing photo taken against a plain, light wall with even lighting.
- 2
Choose the country
Pick the country and document. The face is aligned automatically to the official head size, and you can fine-tune it by dragging and zooming.
- 3
Download and print
Save a single 300 DPI photo for online applications, or a 4×6 in, A4 or Letter sheet to print at home or at a photo kiosk.
Passport photos without the photo booth
Official photos have strict rules about size and how large the head must be within the frame. This tool knows the requirements for the most common documents: 2×2 inch photos for US and Indian passports and visas, 35×45 mm photos for the UK, Ireland, the Schengen area and most of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, 50×70 mm for Canada, 33×48 mm for Chinese visas, and a custom size for anything else.
How the guides work
The two dashed lines show where the top of the head (including hair) and the chin should be. The shaded bands show the allowed range for the selected country, and the oval helps you centre the face. Auto-align finds your face, straightens a tilted head and scales it to the right size in one click. The face detection also runs in your browser.
Printing tips
- Print the sheet at 100% / actual size and turn off “fit to page”, otherwise the photos come out the wrong size.
- Use glossy or matte photo paper, or upload the 4×6 in sheet to any photo printing service. It is usually far cheaper than a booth.
- Cut along the light grey lines.
Photo rules to remember
Most countries ask for a recent photo with a neutral expression, eyes open and mouth closed, no glasses, no shadows on the face or background, and a plain white or light grey background. Rules change from time to time, so always check your government's official guidance before you submit.
